Today, Feb. 19, the Montgomery County Board of Education approved an amended recommended $3.78 billion operating budget for Fiscal Year 2027. The recommended budget, originally presented by Superintendent Thomas W. Taylor, is a 5.2% increase over current spending.

Since the first budget was presented in December, MCPS has reduced its request for local county tax money by $331,161. This reduction was made after school leaders made adjustments based on feedback during community meetings, and the state is providing more aid than originally expected.

The amended budget also focuses on keeping support staff in schools and responding to feedback from parents and teachers. Key updates include:

  • Bringing back positions for nine pupil personnel workers and two family engagement specialists who work directly with students and their families.
  • Holding a plan to cut 11 middle school administrators to ensure schools have enough leadership on-site.
  • Updating how the district assigns resource teachers to schools to better match the number of students who need help, while keeping dedicated teachers at all special education centers.
  • Increasing funding for Community Schools that provides extra services to neighborhoods with higher poverty rates.
  • The budget also adds funds for staff safety training and expands a mentorship program for minority students in elementary schools.

The budget now moves to the County Executive and County Council for review. A final vote on the funding is expected in June.
