The following individuals have been appointed to serve on the Advisory Committee until June 30, 2027.
District 2 Board Member Natalie Zimmerman serves as Chair of the Advisory Committee, and Monica Lopez-Biro serves as Co-Chairperson.
At its September 9, 2026 meeting, the Advisory Committee on Communication and Engagement established norms and ground rules for collaboration and participation, reviewed the approved Informational Summary from the May 14, 2026 meeting, and held an election for Co-Chairperson. Monica Lopez-Biro was selected by the Advisory Committee members present to serve as Co-Chairperson.
Ms. Swiatocha and Mr. Connelly reviewed the July 16, 2026 Board presentation with the Advisory Committee. They discussed MCPS’ ongoing efforts to address declining enrollment and excess school capacity, including the potential consolidation or closure of elementary and middle schools. While no specific school consolidation or closure options are being proposed at this stage, the district is beginning a community engagement process to better understand what families and community members value most in the student experience and to gather input to inform future recommendations. The lively discussion with Advisory Committee members emphasized transparent, accessible communication; proactive outreach to families, daycares, preschools, PTAs, faith-based organizations, and community partners; and the importance of clearly explaining how community feedback will be gathered and utilized. The Superintendent is expected to present recommendations in February 2027, followed by public hearings and a Board vote in the spring, with any approved changes anticipated to take effect in the 2029–2030 school year.
On December 5, 2024 the Board of Education established a citizens advisory committee on communication and engagement. The Board sees an opportunity to strengthen community connections by creating a standing advisory committee focused on communications and engagement. Each year, the committee will address one key topic aimed at improving communication and engagement. This replaces the Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Committee established in 2019. The new advisory committee will include community members, allowing them to play an active role in the process. The vice president will serve as the Board's representative on the committee.

Citizen advisory committees are required by the Annotated Code of Maryland, Education Article §4-112, to ensure that local school boards will be informed by a variety of opinions from citizens and staff when considering specific issues, activities, and programs.
