    Overview Resumen

    The Two-Way Immersion (TWI) program in MCPS is grounded in The Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education. TWI schools in MCPS implement a 50/50 model. In a 50/50 model, students spend 50% of their day learning in Spanish and 50% of their day learning in English. The standard county curriculum, scope, and sequence are adjusted to meet the interdisciplinary biliteracy unit approach used in the TWI schools. Students interact with each other academically and socially to develop proficiency in both Spanish and English. The classroom teacher serves as the language model and as such, must maintain fidelity to using the target language, while using effective comprehensible input strategies to support the comprehension of their students. Students also serve as language models to their peers, and all students in the program are learning content through a second or new language. We believe that students should actively and consistently use and produce the partner language daily through words, actions, and work products.

     

    El programa de Inmersión Bidireccional (TWI, por sus siglas en inglés) de MCPS se fundamenta en los Principios Rectores para la Educación de Lenguaje Dual. Las escuelas TWI de MCPS implementan un modelo 50/50. En este modelo, los estudiantes pasan el 50 % de la jornada escolar aprendiendo en español y el otro 50 % aprendiendo en inglés. El plan de estudios estándar del condado, así como su alcance y secuencia, se adaptan para cumplir con el enfoque de unidades interdisciplinarias de biletricidad utilizado en las escuelas TWI. Los estudiantes interactúan entre sí, tanto académica como socialmente, para desarrollar competencia lingüística tanto en español como en inglés. El maestro de aula actúa como modelo lingüístico y, por tanto, debe mantener la fidelidad al uso del idioma de instrucción, empleando al mismo tiempo estrategias eficaces de aporte comprensible para facilitar la comprensión de sus alumnos.     In a Two-Way Immersion Program:
    ▲▲ Students receive 50% of their content instruction in English and 50% in Spanish to ensure that both languages have equal status
    ▲▲ Students develop fluency in a second language while continuing to build literacy in their home language
    ▲▲ Students develop greater understanding, tolerance, appreciation, and respect for other languages and culture

    Evaluation and Reporting

    Students receive the regular report cards with teacher comments regarding the progress in the second language.  Students participate in the same standardized testing in English as their peers in the English classrooms. In addition, third, fourth, and fifth grade students will have specific content-based written assignments scored to provide information on the development of the Spanish language. 

    Enrollment

    Rolling Terrace Elementary School is a Two-Way Immersion school.  Students who reside within the RT school boundaries will participate in the school-wide program, and only students who have RT as a home school may participate.  All grades, kindergarten through grade 5, are part of the two-way immersion program.

    NOTE: Rolling Terrace ES is not part of the immersion lottery.

    Exiting the program

    On rare occasions, Spanish immersion is not deemed the best program for a particular child.  If there are concerns about first language development or language processing difficulties, immersion might add an unnecessary level of difficulty and frustration for a child.  Close communication between the child's parents, teachers, and other school professionals can help plan appropriately for each child.
